I suspect that every one of your business clients seeks to work with you and your firm because you bring a dose of good business sense to everything you do with them.

Yes, there's accounts. Yes, there's tax. Yes, there’s audit and other accountancy services that you provide but, ultimately, their reason for working with you is connected with more than just the services.

It's connected with the way you help them feel that they've got a better, safer future – for themselves and their business, their families, their team, and their clients. In my discussion with Neil Campbell about sustainability, I was able to see, all of a sudden, how important that subject is, because it makes good business sense.

If you want one or two very simple and very practical frameworks around which to form a sustainability conversation with your clients, a conversation that's got a practical edge to it and that raises the bar in the way they trust you, then listen to this podcast.

1. Listen to this Humanise The Numbers podcast with Neil Campbell of Pure Path Advisory.  Neil shares his thoughts about how good governance is really about managing the risks to your firm, whether they be climate-, cyber-, financial-, supplier-, or people-related.  He discusses the risks that can affect your business and how to ensure that you are not only aware of them but have structures and processes in place to deal with them.

2. Listen to this Humanise The Numbers podcast with Neil Campbell of Pure Path Advisory.  Neil discusses managing your supply chain and understanding the risks that might affect the businesses connected to you.  He poses the question:  Are you considering risk?  Risk in your supply chain?  Or are you just leaving it to luck?  Luck is not a business strategy!

3. Listen to this Humanise The Numbers podcast with Neil Campbell of Pure Path Advisory.  Neil talks about the importance of reporting climate-related risks and opportunities and building it into the strategic planning within your firm. The Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) is a framework established by the Financial Stability Board (FSB) in 2015 to develop consistent, transparent, and reliable climate-related financial risk disclosures.  It enables companies to inform investors about how they manage climate risks, structured around four pillars – governance, strategy, risk management, and metrics – in other words, how you run your business.  Neil believes that if these four pillars are talking to each other within your business and you are looking at them as part of your strategic plan, this is good governance.

4. Listen to this Humanise The Numbers podcast with Neil Campbell of Pure Path Advisory.  Neil believes that, as well as managing the risks within your own firm, you can have the 'good governance' conversations with your clients, centred around the framework established by the TCFD (Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures).

5. Listen to this Humanise The Numbers podcast with Neil Campbell of Pure Path Advisory. Neil talks about how risk management is not just about climate risk management, but is made up of five elements:  Identification, Impact, Assessment, Mitigation, and Reporting.

He goes onto say that accountants have an opportunity to position themselves as the trusted advisor, to look at these numbers for the client, make sense of them, and report back.

6. Listen to this Humanise The Numbers podcast with Neil Campbell of Pure Path Advisory.  Paul and Neil chat about how accountants often feel uncomfortable about having ESG conversations with clients as it is out of the numbers and accounting field.  But they both believe that you should start with the four pillars of climate risk and the five elements of risk management, and then ask questions.  Build up and prepare a set of questions and get the conversation started, so you get the client thinking.

If you are doing this and your competition isn't, it’s a real value add.

Neil states that there are massive opportunities for accountants in the ESG space.  A couple of years ago, Deloitte put the global opportunity within the ESG world at $12 trillion.

7. Listen to this Humanise The Numbers podcast with Neil Campbell of Pure Path Advisory.  Neil talks about the importance of data and backing up whatever you say with the right data, delivered at the right time.  When you act, you have to show the data behind it.

8. Listen to this Humanise The Numbers podcast with Neil Campbell of Pure Path Advisory.  Neil discusses many different aspects of ESG and climate change.  He talks about coastal erosion, flooding, storms, fires, ice melts, deforestation, slavery, and changing sea levels, but he also talks a lot about the other changes affecting us, including AI, political influence, social movements, the effect of the younger generation in the workforce, and the net zero targets.

He feels that making a start, no matter how small, is so important.  Just make the changes simple, relevant, and actionable.

9. Listen to this Humanise The Numbers podcast with Neil Campbell of Pure Path Advisory.  Neil and Paul talk about connecting ESG to the core purpose of your business and to your personal goals.

Do you want to pass your business onto your children?

Do you want to sell it in 5 or 10 years?

Plan your personal goals into your strategy, and define your core purpose with ESG and risk management included.  Then, live it!

You have to make sure you plan for the risks so that, when the time comes to sell your business, it worth what you intended.

10. Listen to this Humanise The Numbers podcast with Neil Campbell of Pure Path Advisory.  Towards the end of the podcast, Paul and Neil make the connection between People, Profit, and Planet.

But Neil switches it round – Planet, People, and Profit.
